Selected companies: Thuringia offers excellent growth opportunities for automotive manufacturers and suppliers with a wide range of expertise.
CATL
The Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (CATL), one of the world's leading producers, is building its first lithium-ion battery plant outside of China in Arnstadt. This will be the first mass production facility for electric vehicle batteries in Germany. The investment amounts to approximately €2 billion and will create 2,000 jobs. Customers include nearly all German automakers. In addition to production, research and development facilities are also planned; CATL's European logistics center will also be located in Thuringia. This will transform the Free State of Thuringia into a hub for e-mobility and battery technology.
MDC Power GmbH
In 2003, the engine plant MDC Power GmbH – a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG – commenced operations. From the very first engine, the engine builders placed great emphasis on the highest quality and were able to continuously expand their product range. Today, MDC Power employees assemble their engines in numerous variants: Engines ranging from 95 to 360 hp, bearing the "Made in Thuringia" quality seal, are available and delivered to vehicle plants on five continents. They are used in almost all Mercedes-Benz passenger car and van model series – from the A-Class to the S-Class, from Mercedes-AMG to the Sprinter.
Bell Equipment
The South African construction equipment manufacturer Bell Equipment Ltd. has a production facility in Eisenach. In 2003, the globally operating corporation established its dump truck plant in Thuringia. Bell Equipment is one of the two leading suppliers in the German dump truck market. Bell also distinguishes itself at its Thuringian location through its strong commitment to employee training and development.
BorgWarner Transmission Systems
The skilled workforce, excellent transport links, and unbureaucratic support from the authorities also convinced the US automotive supplier BorgWarner. The company built two production facilities in Arnstadt to manufacture clutches for dual-clutch transmissions and all-wheel-drive systems, including those for the Bugatti Veyron.
Borbet
Since 2004, BORBET has operated the largest production facility for aluminum wheels in Europe in Bad Langensalza, Thuringia, employing over 900 people. The Bad Langensalza location was chosen for good reason: It has always had, and continues to have, a large number of qualified specialists in aluminum and magnesium casting.
